Hijacked PC numbers "surge"

Symantec has reported a 30% increase in the number of hijacked PCs in the past year. The PCs, which make up a worldwide "bot network", are used by criminals to email spam and viruses and perform DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks.  The rise is probably linked to the massive increase in the number of users coming online, as access methods like broadband become more and more widely available.

PCs are hijacked when users download and install software containing malicious code which takes over their computer. Such software, called "malware", often appears to be safe, but users should ensure that they only obtain software from trustworthy sources, and that they scan it before installing with an up-to-date antivirus solution.  Computers can also be hijacked just by connecting them to the internet, as we discussed last month, so users should also make sure that they are using a good firewall solution.

Here are some top tips to stay safe online:

* Install anti-virus software and make sure you keep it up-to-date
* Install a personal firewall and/or ensure your operating system's firewall is on
* Use Windows and Apple updates to patch security holes
* Do not open e-mail messages that look suspicious
* Do not click on e-mail attachments you were not expecting
* Take time to educate yourself and family about the risks
* Monitor your computer and stay alert to threats
